The countdown is over, with the Tara Festival of Culture and Camel Races returning this weekend from 31 July to 2 August 2026, ready to welcome thousands of visitors to the tiny Western Downs town for what has become known as Australia’s Biggest Camel Party.
Festival-goers from across Queensland and Australia will descend on Tara for three unforgettable days of camel racing, live entertainment, multicultural performances, family fun and country hospitality.
Over the past two decades, the biennial festival has become one of Australia’s premier camel racing events, renowned for its unique combination of professional camel racing and an action-packed entertainment program.
Festival President Kerry Kelly said the committee was overwhelmed by the support shown for this year’s event.
“Words can’t express how grateful we are for the incredible support we’ve received this year, especially at a time when so many regional events are facing challenges,” Ms Kelly said.
“Our population will grow by six fold, drawing an expected 12,000+ people over the weekend, and festival-goers have already started arriving in town ready for all the fun to begin when the gates open at 4pm on Friday.”
“Our committee spends countless hours planning every detail to create a fantastic experience for our visitors, and seeing the town come alive makes every minute worthwhile.”
The festivities begin on Friday morning, with the Tara Schools’ Book Week Parade and Main Street Markets filling the town with colour before festival gates officially open that afternoon. Friday night’s entertainment features “Australia’s Wildest Cowboy Party” Luke Geiger, the spectacular Aussie FMX Riders of the Night, and a dazzling fireworks display to launch the weekend.
Camel racing begins from 9:00am on Saturday, with 14 professional camel races contested across two days and $30,000 in prize money up for grabs.
Away from the track, the weekend continues with two stages showcasing a diverse lineup of cultural performances and live entertainment, headlined by Australian country music star James Johnston. Joining him across the weekend are Country Rock artist Robbie Mortimer and Australia’s Best Country Music DJ, Dee Jaye Bux.
Families can enjoy the Kids Zone, camel rides, the Bluey and Bingo Live Experience, markets and plenty of free entertainment.
Returning to Tara Festival this year is 2024 Australian Idol finalist Trent Richardson, whose connection to the festival runs much deeper than the stage.
Raised on a camel farm in Central Queensland, Trent grew up immersed in the camel racing industry through his family’s involvement in the sport. Many long-time festival-goers will remember him attending Tara Festival alongside his father, camel racing identity John “Richo” Richardson.
“Since our first festival in 2001, Tara Festival has grown into one of Queensland Country’s signature events, thanks to the passion and dedication of our volunteer committee and local community,” Ms Kelly said.
“We’re incredibly proud of what this festival has become and can’t wait to welcome everyone to Tara for another unforgettable weekend.”
