James Johnston to Headline Tara Festival as Tickets Go On Sale

The tiny town of Tara in Queensland’s Western Downs is set to come alive this August, with its population expected to swell dramatically as thousands of festival-goers descend on the region for the return of the Tara Festival of Culture and Camel Races, from 31 July – 2 August 2026.

Golden Guitar and Countrytown Awards winner, and one of Australia’s most exciting country music stars, James Johnston will take centre stage as the headline act for what has become known as Australia’s biggest camel party, leading a huge weekend of culture, camels and camping.

Johnston said he was excited to return to Tara Festival following his previous appearance in 2022.

“Tara Festival has been a big part of my journey from the very beginning, from playing the after party nearly ten years ago to playing a band show in 2022 to now bringing my headline show. This one’s going to be special,” he said.

Joining Johnston on the Saturday night line-up will be Australian country rock artist Robbie Mortimer and Australia’s best country music DJ, Dee Jaye Bux, bringing high-energy entertainment long after the camels leave the track.

Friday night will see one of Queensland’s most sought-after country artists, Luke Geiger, kick things off with his signature “Australia’s Wildest Cowboy Party”, setting the tone for a massive weekend ahead.

After the usual 2 years ‘between drinks’ for the 31 July – 2 August 2026 return of the festival, organisers have already fielded a surge of enquiries for tickets and camping, ahead of tickets going on sale Wednesday 25 March at 11AM AEST.

The festival’s popularity has soared in recent years, becoming one of Australia’s most sought-after camel racing events, celebrated for its unique mix of camels, culture and camping. More than 20,000 attendees are expected to secure their spot for the 2026 event.

Festival President Kerry Kelly said the event continues to be a source of pride for the local community.

“The people of our town set out to create a festival that would put Tara on the map and deliver a truly fun and positive experience,” Ms Kelly said.

“Since 2001, it’s grown into a major event on Queensland’s calendar, and it’s still proudly run by a passionate team of locals who love where they live.”

From its vibrant opening night, the festival delivers a full weekend of entertainment, including professional camel races every hour, yabby races, multicultural performances, live music across two stages, roving entertainers, a dedicated kids’ zone and spectacular fireworks.

Despite Tara’s population of fewer than 2,000 residents, the festival has become one of the largest gatherings in the Queensland Country region, with the 2024 event drawing record crowds and selling out.

The Tara Festival of Culture and Camel Races is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland.
